Workshop 2010

What type of cognition for cognitive linguistics?

Bordeaux, June 4-5, 2010

The French Association for Cognitive Linguistics (AFLiCo) is pleased to announce a workshop on the relationship between cognition and cognitive linguistics, to be held in at the University of Bordeaux, June 4-5, 2010. Invited speaker is Jean-Pierre DESCLES (Université de Paris IV).

THEME

The terms "cognitive (structure / mechanism)" and "(embodied social) cognizer" are regularly used in cognitive linguistic publications. However, what type of cognition or cognizer is at issue here? Is cognitive linguistics really part of cognitive science? The objective of this workshop is to determine (i) what exactly is meant by the term "cognition" in both applied and theoretical publications and (ii) how we use it ourselves in our own analyses?

More specific questions addressed in this workshop are the following. What is the interest or originality of a cognitive approach to linguistic phenomena? What evolutions can be observed? What issues can be identified? What domains of research or what phenomena would we like to see emerge in the field of cognitive linguistics? What type of integration of cross-fertilisation with other fields can or should be envisaged?

We welcome contributions from researchers in linguistics, philososophy, cognitive science or other fields addressing these questions.
